Will Working Interviews Save You Money?
You may be curious about trying a working interview after hearing how it can help your business. Or, you may be wondering: will working interviews actually save me money? In short, yes, they will.
We'll share how working interviews save your business money and our best practices for making the most of them!
How Working Interviews Save Money
There are three main reasons that working interviews save money in the long run:
Fill gaps while searching
Reduce time-to-fill
Reduce turnover
Fill gaps while searching
With working interviews, you don't need to put tasks on hold until you make a permanent hire. You can have candidates come in to complete the tasks and assess them on the work done. For example, if your Bookkeeper resigns you can hire someone to come in right away to fill the bookkeeping tasks instead of waiting until hiring a permanent employee. Assigning realistic duties are perfect for getting a good grasp on the candidate. Instead of giving busy work, evaluate them on practical tasks for the role. Then, your business stays efficient, and you don’t fall behind.
Reduced time-to-fill
Between sourcing, interviewing, and vetting, the average time to fill a role is 36 days. All business owners understand how critical it is to have employees start soon. Working interviews let you bring people in to complete work and shorten the time-to-fill. They get into the role faster, have less stagnant time between interviews, and there's less vetting to do. Plus, they need less onboarding, since they've already worked shifts.
Reduced Turnover
Turnover is challenging for most companies. Working interviews empower both companies and candidates to assess each other. So, they can significantly decrease turnover. Candidates know what to expect since they know what it's like working with the company. They had a chance to try it out and decide it was a good fit.
How to Get the Most Out of Working Interviews
It can be hard to know where to start if working interviews are new to you. You can follow our guide on working interviews here. The following are a few extra things you can do to make sure you're getting the most out of working interviews.
Schedule a few candidates to come in
Schedule at least three candidates for a working interview. This will increase your chances of finding your perfect match. Then if someone isn't a good fit or doesn't show up, you still have more people scheduled.
Think of it this way – when using traditional interviews, you won't stop searching after you've booked one interview. You’d interview a few until you find the best fit. You can stagger candidates to come in one at a time or have them all in at once. It's up to your personal preference.
Tip: If you've found one candidate you think is a good fit, still conduct the rest of the interviews. Something could fall through, or you may like the next candidate better!
Allow enough time to evaluate candidates
The amount of time you schedule candidates depends on your business and the role. But, allow sufficient time to get a good idea of how candidates will perform in the role. If the job has a steep learning curve, don't expect people to get the hang of it immediately. Instead, schedule a bit of extra time. You can end the contract early if you realize a candidate's not right for a role.
We believe you need to give a candidate at least two hours in any role. That's the minimum amount of time you can schedule with AmbiMi. If you start with two hours and realize you need extra time, you can extend the contract. Although, giving candidates an accurate time estimate will help set expectations and ensure they are available.
Skip the traditional vetting process
Vetting processes take up a lot of time in the hiring process. It can include reference checks, education checks, background checks, and more. If it's necessary, you can still complete them. Otherwise, we recommend skipping it. You can get the best insight by seeing how they'll perform on the job. It's not likely that other vetting will be worth your time and resources.
AmbiMi hosts candidate’s verified resumes with their past jobs, skills, and ratings. Everything is automated, meaning you can trust the information. This makes reference checks obsolete since all information is verified with every job.
