15 Ways You Can Thrive as a Gig Worker

Gig work has many benefits (here are 12 reasons here!), but there are steps you can take to get the most out of gigging.

Whether you already are or planning to become a gigger, here are 15 ways to succeed as a gig professional.

  1. Select your jobs wisely

Before accepting a gig, look closely at the description, requirements, wage, and shifts. That might be obvious advice, but it’s easy to go all-in for a gig that pays $100, only to discover it takes two days to complete. On the other hand, you don’t want to show up to a gig only to realize you don’t have the prior experience to complete the tasks.

  2. Choose gigs that match your goals

Make a goal and stick to it. Short-term goals are often as simple as some extra dollars but focus on long-term goals too. Examples could be learning new skills and abilities or building relationships.

  3. Plan your schedule ahead of time

Although you can book last-minute gigs, it doesn’t always mean you should. We recommend scheduling shifts the week before (or longer) to ensure you have enough hours throughout the week. Then if you have extra time, you can book gigs last minute.

  4. Don’t over-schedule

It can be tempting to fill every available minute you have, and it may be a good idea for a short period or if you’re saving for something big. But, if you do it too much, it often leads to burnout. Figure out what your capacity is and keep your hours within it.

  5. Diversify your skillset

Learning new skills is a great way of standing out from the crowd when applying for jobs, and it’s no different for gig work. If you’re interested in picking up a new skill, consider taking on gigs that broaden your skillset.

  6. Treat every day as a working interview

Give every shift your all! Act as each shift is a working interview, and who knows – it may turn into a permanent offer, you might be rehired, or you might get a pay increase!

We recommend arriving early, maintaining a professional appearance, and volunteering for extra responsibilities. If you want a full guide on how to ace a working interview, take a look at our recommendations here.

  7. Make work times off-limits to friends

If possible, leave your phone in a locker during your gig. Otherwise, let your texts, personal calls, and ringing doorbells go unanswered while you’re working.

Tip: Set your phone to do not disturb or work mode to ignore incoming notifications.

  8. Have a positive attitude

You may not think you’ll see these coworkers again, but you never know what leaving a good impression can do. If you’re friendly and ambitious, it might benefit you in the future.

  9. Network

Sometimes it’s easy to show up, do your job, and get out with little social interaction. Try to socialize with coworkers and ask questions to build your network. You will gain valuable insight, which can lead to more opportunities.

  10. Be teachable

On top of asking questions, be a sponge and learn as much as possible! It will improve your performance and show your willingness to learn and implement feedback.

  11. Ask for feedback

Asking for feedback can be scary, but we promise it’s worth it. At the end of the gig, ask for feedback that you can implement in future gigs.

  12. Be honest

If a gig isn’t for you, be honest and tell the supervisor. If you ghost them, it can reflect poorly or prevent you from getting some opportunities.

  13. Be patient

If you’re looking for a permanent offer, remember it doesn’t always happen right away. A gig doesn’t promise a permanent position. Learn as much about the role as possible.

  14. Keep track of your finances

Make sure you’ve taken on enough gig work to cover your working and living expenses. The gig economy can be unstable, so set aside a portion of your pay towards an emergency fund to keep you through months of getting less gig work.

  15. Build a portfolio

Keep track of your past jobs to build a portfolio. You can use this to show your skills and experience to companies and increase your chances of getting a job.
