How To Find Part-Time Jobs in Canada

You're planning to move to Canada and are beyond excited. Yet, when it comes to getting a job, you don't know where to start. Your first instinct might be to type "find a part-time job" in Google, and maybe that's how you ended up here! That's not a bad start, but there are easier ways to get through the hiring process.

It can be overwhelming to start your job search in a new country. There's a lot to prepare, from applying for work permits to reaching out to potential employers. To help you navigate the Canadian hiring process, we’ve outlined steps to help newcomers find jobs.

Before You Arrive in Canada

If you haven't already, you should get a study or work permit (sometimes called a student visa or work visa). We recommend getting a permit before moving since it can take up to three months to be approved. You need to have a valid study or work permit with a temporary SIN number before you can get a job in Canada.

There are different rules for different types of permits in Canada. Some things to note for work permits are:

  • An employer-specific work permit specifies the company, hours, and location you can work. This is most likely for you if you're moving to Canada for a specific company.

  • An open work permit lets you get a job with any company (except those that failed to follow conditions or certain services).

Some things to note for study permits are:

  • You must be enrolled in school full-time.

  • You can work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session; when on break, you can work as much as you want.

After You Arrive in Canada

Welcome, eh! You've arrived with your valid study or work permit, and now it's time to find a Canadian job.

What Type of Jobs to Look For

A great option for newcomers and international students is temporary jobs. They allow you to gain Canadian work experience fast and are easier to find than permanent jobs. Meaning you can get a job and get paid faster. Plus, if you're an international student, you can find a job that works around your class schedule.

Pro-tip: If you are looking for a permanent role, look for positions with a temp-to-hire opportunity! This means the job can become permanent with the right fit.

A common myth about temp jobs is that they pay less. Wages are often higher, with the average wage for temp jobs in Canada currently at $21.30. Some common part-time temp jobs you can get are:

  1. Customer Service Representative

  2. Sales Associate

  3. Office Assistant

  4. Bookkeeper

  5. Bartender/Server

  6. Cook

  7. Delivery Driver

  8. Warehouse Associate

  9. Forklift Driver

  10. Construction Labourer

Many more temporary roles are available, but these are our top ten. Narrow down what types of jobs you are looking for, then start your job search!

How Ankit Found a Job with AmbiMi

Ankit is an international student who arrived in Canada with a study permit. He starts school in a few days and wants to find a part-time job while studying. His goal is to find a permanent warehouse job, but he needs to find a position fast. So, he starts looking for temp-to-perm opportunities.

Upon discovering AmbiMi using a Google search, Ankit visits his closest Job Hub. He speaks with one of our friendly Job Hub Specialists and tells them what he's looking for. Ankit does on-the-spot assessments, and we get him a job as a Warehouse Associate the next day.

Ankit goes to the job, enjoys it and gets along with all his colleagues, so they continue his contract for a month. During that time, he goes in for shifts around his school schedule. He learns warehouse duties like purchasing and receiving shipments. Ankit made a good impression on the organization by being reliable and hardworking. Then, after the month, the organization decides he's a great fit and offers him a permanent role.

AmbiMi helped Ankit find the job he was looking for shortly after arriving in Canada.
